Berlinde Deman (BE)
Melancholic serpent and tuba player, Berlinde Deman crafts dark, cinematic melodies with a playful twist. Her search for new sound worlds brought her to the serpent, a rare wind instrument from the 16th century – the mysterious predecessor of the tuba.
In her solo-serpent works she connects the deep breath of this age-old instrument with the layering of loops and effects. She stretches time, weaves textures and plays with resonance to open a universe that escapes the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Berlinde Deman has made her mark in jazz, contemporary and classical music. She plays the tuba in the Flat Earth Society Orchestra and as a versatile musician she performs with Dave Douglas, Ab Baars Trio, Jef Neve, Spinvis, Dez Mona, Dick van der Harst, Spectra, Vvolk, MikMáäk, Razen, B.O.X. and Machinefabriek, among others.
